Packers: Running back stat predictions for 2018 season
By Jesse Fry
Ty Montgomery
Montgomery is on the last year of his rookie contract, and has to prove he can stay healthy. He has only played a full season once in his three years in Green Bay.
Head coach Mike McCarthy still has a ton of confidence in Montgomery, so his position on the team is not in question. What is in question is his role. It is well known by now, Montgomery started his NFL career as a receiver.
Montgomery is a key chess piece for the Packers. His skill set makes him a nightmare to defend out of the backfield. He is just as capable of taking a handoff for 60 yards, as he is running a wheel route out of the backfield and turning it into a huge gain, or motioning out of the backfield and being able to run a full route tree. Montgomery has proven he can take a handoff up the middle and pick up the tough yards as well.
Just like the other two backs, Montgomery’s presence on the field doesn’t give away what play the Packers intend to run. Any of the backs allow the Packers to stay in no-huddle and wear down defenses.
If McCarthy is serious about scrubbing his playbook and adding new wrinkles, these three running backs give McCarthy plenty of ammunition to use.
