Five Packers who have impressed in first quarter of season
JK Scott
Punters often go unnoticed unless they make mistakes, but that hasn’t been the case for JK Scott. Often, when the offense has been unable to move the ball and the field position isn’t in the Packers’ favor, Scott has come to the rescue. So far this season, Scott has punted 23 times for 1,104 yards, averaging 48 yards per punt, which is ninth-best in the NFL.
Of his 23 punts, 10 have ended up within the opponents’ 20-yard line, which is tied for fifth-most in the league. He’s also forced a fair catch on eight of his punts, which is tied for second-best.
The Packers’ special teams has been up and down, and they’ve given up some lengthy returns on kickoffs, but Scott has been kicking at a high level consistently this year. He has often given the Packers the advantage in the field position battle, forcing opponents to go the length of the field to score.
That’s the kind of difference he has made for the Packers and why he deservedly makes this list.
Interestingly, no offensive players make the top five. Aaron Rodgers had his best game in Week 4, as did Davante Adams. Aaron Jones impressed against the Minnesota Vikings but has been inconsistent. The offense has had its moments of brilliance, but so far has lacked consistency.
The Packers’ 3-1 start is largely down to the dominance of the defense. Their first loss came in the only game the defense struggled.
The Smiths, Alexander, Savage and Scott have been the standout performers for the Packers in the opening four weeks of the season.
