Special teams

Once again, special teams has been a mess for the Packers. It’s such an important part of the game, yet the Packers make far too many mistakes. It’s key to the battle of field position, but too often the Packers either give up a big return or have one of their own called back due to a penalty.

It’s important to note that this doesn’t include Mason Crosby or JK Scott. Crosby has been close to perfect this season, converting 13 of his 14 field goal attempts. He’s also perfect on extra-point attempts. Scott has been inconsistent, but overall it’s been a solid season for the second-year punter.

According to NFLPenalties.com, the Packers have given up 10 penalties on special teams this season, including four in the past two weeks.

Through Week 9, Football Outsiders had Green Bay ranked 20th in its special teams ratings.

After 10 games, there’s certainly a lot to praise this team for. They’ve won close games and played some excellent football along the way. The bye week gives them extra time to rest an evaluate what they’ve been able to achieve so far this season, and also what they need to improve.
