Packers: Five players who should be All-Pros in 2019
3. Preston Smith
One of the Packers’ big free-agency signings back in March, Preston Smith has made a significant impact on defense alongside Za’Darius Smith.
Preston Smith has done it all in Mike Pettine’s defense. He currently leads the team in sacks with 11.5, and that number is also good for sixth in the NFL. Smith is also eighth in the league in quarterback hits with 22.
Game-changing plays? Smith has made plenty. He has forced a fumble, made an interception, has 10 tackles for loss and also has three pass defenses.
There’s a reason why the Packers were willing to give Smith a multi-year deal in free agency worth $52 million despite the fact he had never put up double-digit sacks in a single season. They knew just how good he could be in this system. It should come as no surprise that he’s set career-bests in sacks, and there are still three games to go.
Smith is currently four sacks off NFL leader Shaquil Barrett, so it’s unlikely he’ll be the sack leader at the end of the season. But there’s no doubting the impact he has made to the Green Bay defense, and he’s been consistently playing at an All-Pro level all season long.
