The Packers need to get a lot better at defending the run. Despite the improvements to the pass rush this past season, Mike Pettine’s defense had little answer for opposing rushing attacks, which Kyle Shanahan exploited in the NFC Championship Game. He decided to run the ball until the Packers found a way to stop it. The fact Jimmy Garoppolo threw eight passes in a blowout 49ers win tells you everything you need to know.

Enter Michael Pierce, an excellent run defender who could help the Packers fix their biggest weakness on defense.

Pierce won’t play on every down and is used primarily against the run, but it’s an area he’s strong. With him on the field, the Packers would be much tougher to run against, helping set up third-and-longs, which is when Pettine’s unit can dominate.

Pro Football Focus ranked the top 100 available free agents this offseason. Pierce came in at No. 42.

"“Pierce is a role player, but he’s proven to be capable of putting together a valuable 400-500 snaps as an early-down run stopper.”"

Spotrac’s estimate is that Pierce’s market value is $4.7 million a year, likely on a two-year contract. That’s an affordable deal for a player who can step right into the defense and make a difference against the run.

Giving Kenny Clark help along the defensive line is key to improving against the run. Pierce would be a good addition.
