Packers three-round mock draft: Quarterback edition
Round 3 (94): Davon Hamilton, DL, Ohio State
It’s surprising the Packers haven’t added a defensive lineman via free agency. While they did sign Christian Kirksey to replace Blake Martinez at linebacker, there is still a need for more talent up front. If they haven’t added to the defensive line in the next few weeks, they’ll need to do so in the draft.
In the third round, Ohio State’s Davon Hamilton could help Green Bay’s run defense.
Hamilton had his best season at Ohio State in 2019, making 28 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss and six sacks.
A case can certainly be made for drafting an inside linebacker in the opening three rounds, but Hamilton felt like the best choice here. Green Bay has already signed Kirksey this offseason which eases the pressure slightly on using an early pick at linebacker. Brian Gutekunst could decide to go with a mid-round pick at linebacker, allowing him to strengthen the defensive line earlier on.
There’s no question that by drafting a quarterback in the first round, it becomes that much more challenging to address every position of need. If a QB that Gutekunst likes is there at No. 30, it will be a big decision to make. Doing so could pay off years down the line but in the short term, it would make it harder to fix every area of need.
