Packers: Pre-camp 53-man roster predictions for 2021
Wide receivers (5)
Davante Adams, Allen Lazard, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Amari Rodgers, Devin Funchess
Finally, the offseason isn’t about how the Packers aren’t getting Rodgers any help. They have arguably the best receiver in the NFL in Davante Adams and drafted Amari Rodgers in the third round of the NFL Draft this spring. They may not be big names that pop out at you, but they all do something well. Pair that with Matt LaFleur’s offense, and this is going to be another dominant, productive group this year.
Adams is your everything superstar, Lazard does all the non-glamorous things like blocking downfield, MVS is your field stretcher, Rodgers is going to be a Swiss Army knife and Funchess could turn into a big-time red zone threat. They all do something different, which is what makes this group so hard to defend.
I think Equanimeous St. Brown just misses out of a roster spot here. He just couldn’t get his career going in Green Bay after constantly battling injuries.
A name to keep an eye on that could sneak onto the roster is Juwann Winfree. He’s been making some noise in minicamps leading up to training camp. It wouldn’t surprise me if he ended up on the 53 so the Packers don’t lose him.
Practice squad candidates: Juwann Winfree, Malik Taylor
Tight ends (4)
Robert Tonyan, Marcedes Lewis, Josiah Deguara, Dominique Dafney
In what is possibly one of the deepest groups of the roster, the tight end position is pretty much set; it just depends on numbers and how many the Packers want to keep. Four seems like a solid number, but Jace Sternberger is going to be suspended to start the season. When he comes back, do you keep five tight ends?
I don’t think the Packers are ready to cut ties with Sternberger yet, especially with Tonyan scheduled to become a free agent next season. I think there are still plans for him in the future. But for now, I think the Packers roll with these four and figure out what to do later when Sternberger is back from his suspension.
