ARE YOU KIDDING ME? That was my screaming reaction to the news that politics would get in the way of the start of the National Football League’s season opening extravaganza between the Green Bay Packers Nd The New Orleans Saints. Scheduled since forever, the opener in Green Bay may just provide the biggest bump in viewership on Sept. 8 because who on God’s green earth is going to watch Barack Obama give his live speech about his jobs program as the game kicks off when we can tune in for the 10 p.m. News to find out what should have [...]
Clay Matthews covers Sports Illustrated
It was announced today that Clay Matthews III, the Packers outside linebacker extraordinaire, has been selected as the cover boy for the Sports Illustrated regional NFL Preview issue. As the national magazine releases its annual preview, Matthews and the Packers prepare to take on the New Orleans Saints next Thursday in the match-up of the past two Super Bowl winners at historic Lambeau Field. The Thursday, Sept. 8, matchup opens the NFL season and sets up a monumental showdown between Aaron Rodgers and Drew Brees. It’s time to get back to football and the SI Preview is sure to get [...]
Bring a jacket or two to Lambeau Field for the opener
You might want to bring a jacket or two (or three) to Lambeau Field for the season opener against the New Orleans Saints … No, more than likely you won’t need to wear more than one (maybe two) layers for the evening game … and the coats you bring might be some you want to give away. I know you all have those extra jackets hanging in that back closet. Dig them out, bag them up and bring them for donation to the annual Coats for Kids collection taking place prior to the game. That ever-present organization, the Salvation Army, [...]
Gatorade is releasing limited edition bottles to celebrate the Packers’ upcoming season. They’ll be available in Walmart, local grocery and convenience stores, but only for the month of September. Stay tuned to Lombardi Ave for a chance to win one for yourself! GO Pack GO!
Sean Payton: Could kick-offs be banned
Sean Payton, who will bring his New Orleans Saints to Green Bay in just about eight days, had some interesting comments about the new kick off rule. Interviewed on pro Football Talk Live tonight, Payton, whose team won the Super Bowl because of his gutsy call on the second half opening kick-off, said the NFL is just a step away from outright banning the play. Our only hope is that he is wrong about his assessment. If there’s one play in all of sports that has become synonymous with an indication of the start of things, it’s the kick-off. For that [...]
Madden 12 – A different look
OK, I admit it – I’m not a gamer – never have been, probably never will be. So if I’ve offended you already – sorry about that. Maybe it’s because all three of my children are girls and while many of you were joining Little League and throwing the football around the yard, I was playing Barbie and dreaming of ponies.
Packers cut Asiodu, Battles – down to 80
The second round and the final two players were released this afternoon by the Green Bay Packers. Again, no surprises with this announcement as the Packers prepare for the fourth and final preseason game Thursday night against the Kansas City Chiefs at Lambeau Field. In making the announcement, the Packers public relations department sent the following release: The Green Bay Packers released second-year LB K.C. Asiodu and first-year G Adrian Battles. The transactions were announced Tuesday by Executive Vice President, General Manager and Director of Football Operations Ted Thompson. Asiodu (ah-see-OH-due) signed with the team as a free agent on [...]
Packers release receiver Robinson
As stated in the previous post, the Packers will release three players today … the first has come down the pike, and as expected it’s not a huge surprise. The Packers just released the information – it’s as follows: The Green Bay Packers released first-year WR Antonio Robinson. The transaction was announced Tuesday by Executive Vice President, General Manager and Director of Football Operations Ted Thompson. Robinson, who signed with the team Jan. 20, 2011, was on the Packers’ practice squad for two playoff games last season. Two more players will be released before the end of the day. Stay [...]
Packers notes: Cobb, Driver, Clifton and knee bruising
Today the Packers must reduce its roster from the current 83 players to 80, meaning that three more players are set to be released by mid-afternoon today, Tuesday, Aug. Aug. Most likely, the three to be let go won’t be huge surprises, but then again I always say this is the NFL, so every day is a surprise. But inching closer to the final preseason game against the Kansas City Chiefs, the Packers have had some interesting developments in camp the past couple of days. Highlighting those developments were the return of rookie Randall Cobb, the continued solid play of [...]
Packers’ Ted Thompson has got huge challenges ahead
This Thursday’s Packers preseason game against the Kansas City Chiefs won’t mean much to the starters as Coach Mike McCarthy most likely will allow them to break a sweat and that’s about all … There’s too much evaluatin’ to do. No doubt, McCarthy and GM Ted Thompson will utilize as much of the game to make final decisions on the likes of Pat Lee, Brandon Underwood, Nick McDonald, Tori Gurley and so many, many others who have been fighting for a roster spot with the world champs. There are many who feel there may be some cuts even before the [...]
