Jones is another physical corner with good size (6-1, 199) and versatility at the next level. He’s played nearly every position in the secondary and would give the Packers a swiss-army knife that could fill multiple roles on their defense.
Jones made headlines during the pre-daft process with his incredible combine workout, showcasing his outstanding vertical (44.5 inches) and leaping ability (147-inch broad jump). However, Jones also performed top marks in all of the other drills, demonstrating his elite quickness and ability to change direction.
Despite having top-tier athleticism, the best parts of Jones’ game go beyond his physical ability. He plays with excellent instincts and ball skills.
He has a natural feel for breaking on the ball and anticipating throws. He recorded five interceptions and 12 pass breakups in his final two years as a starter despite missing five games from a shoulder injury.
Jones would give the Packers something different than what they have at the position. The former Connecticut defensive back is a solid player against the run, much like the Packers’ Micah Hyde, but he’s also a better athlete and has better speed than Hyde.
He has better size and length than Shields and Hayward and might be a better matchup against bigger receivers in the NFL. He could also fill in at safety if need be or play up near the line as a nickel corner.
Jones’ game may not be as polished as the other cornerbacks in this draft, but his versatility, upside, and unique athletic ability make him one of the most intriguing prospects at the position.
There’s a good chance he’d still be available for Green Bay at the end of the second round.
