Letroy Guion … 2014 season was mediocre, at best

While Letroy Guion had his best season as a professional with 62 tackles and 3.5 sacks in 2014, his ranking as a defensive tackle doesn’t indicate that he is worthy of not only a pay raise, but a multi-year contract extension.

On 633 snaps, profootballfocus.com ranked Guion as the sixty-first best defensive tackle in the NFL – that’s out of 81 defensive tackles ranked by the subscription-only website.

Overall, PFF had Guion’s season evaluation at -10.1 and -5.2 against the run.

Guion’s rating as a pass rusher was +2.0, and he did help the team in that department while providing a push up the middle on passing downs – that surely helped the defense.

But when you look at his game-by-game statistics, you can see an up and down performance that wasn’t eye-popping when he proved effective and certainly not very impressive when his numbers and ratings dipped.

In weeks 1-4, his ratings were -1.8, -2.0, -0.3 and -1.1; in weeks 4-6 he had his best outings, ranking +1.7, +2.0 and +2.0.

However, over the course of the remainder of the season, his ranking hovered just below the 0.0 mark (which is average) with his only positive rating coming in week 13 when he posted a +0.4 rating.

His playoff performances is where his ratings dropped precipitously as he posted a -2.5 against the Dallas Cowboys and a -2.4 against the Seattle Seahawks in the championship game.

Is this really a player a franchise would go after and pay millions of dollars over an extended period?

Well, Ted Thompson and Mike McCarthy have provided that answer today – at least for one more season.

So, what about B.J. Raji?
