Round 1: Damarious Randall (S/CB)

I went over my major thoughts on this pick already in my article directly after the first round.

I was confused by the thinking there; it didn’t seem to fit what Green Bay supposedly needed.

A couple days later, it seems at least one of my initial ideas on that selection is right: Randall is seen to be a corner by the Packers.

That makes a ton more sense to me now. The fact that he can also play safety is great; that type of fluidity between positions is a major asset to game-planning on the fly against offenses.

The thinking seems to have him doing a ton of work in the slot at first, which would be great. That gives Green Bay two options there immediately (Hyde also has that same versatility).

It also solidifies the notion of Casey Hayward being the starter on the outside across from Sam Shields, at least at first.

So needless to say, I’ve softened on my original stance that this was a disappointing pick. With their relatively small list of needs, grabbing a guy who can bring more versatility to the team at a spot they in fact did need (since the Packers view him as a CB and not S) is good value.
