As I write this, there are nine days until the Green Bay Packers kick the regular season off against the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field.
To celebrate, I (as self-proclaimed Citizen GM of the Packers) will focus on one person from each of the nine position groups that deserves a roster spot on Saturday.
Countdown to Kickoff – My (NINE) NODS
1. QB – Brett Hundley
Typically, the Packers wouldn’t waste a roster spot on a third quarterback.
However, after learning an invaluable lesson when Rodgers broke his collarbone in 2013 – they have been much more apt to do so.
Having already cut the fourth QB on the depth chart, Matt Blanchard, the Packers are left with Aaron Rodgers, Scott Tolzien and Brett Hundley.
Even if the Packers weren’t already guaranteeing Hundley a roster spot based on need alone, they should be rushing to do so.
Over the course of four preseason games, Hundley led the NFL in preseason passer rating – a very respectable 129.7 overall – capping off a 142.4 rating performance against the Saints Thursday night.
In training camp, Hundley looked like a lost puppy. Throughout the four weeks of preseason, however, he’s been on point. He definitely looks like the guy that the Packers moved up into the fifth round and sacrificed a seventh round draft pick for, back in the spring.
