Aaron goes back to work. Randall Cobb turns a short pass into a 26 yard gain and a first down. Another short pass, this time to John Kuhn, gains 19 yards. Two plays later, Aaron finds James Jones in the End Zone for a touchdown. GB 24 – SD 17
The James Jones story is truly amazing. He now has six TDs in six games. He is tied with Tyler Eifert and Larry Fitzgerald for NFL receiving TDs this year.
The Chargers aren’t done. They get the ball again at the end of the 3rd quarter and march the ball right down the field on another long drive. This one was ten play for 63 yards over 4:36. The Chargers got into the Red Zone but the drive stalled as Rivers was sacked by Mike Daniels and Mike Neal. Chargers settled for a short field goal. GB 24 – SD 20.
The Packers go 3 and out (again). There seems nothing the Packers defense can do to slow down Phillip Rivers as he has led the Chargers on five drives with 10+ plays. Three plays and two first downs later, San Diego is 1st and 10 on the GB40. Datone Jones is able to break through the line and sack Rivers for a four yard loss forcing a punt on 4th down.
If you wanted offense, scoring and excitement, this was the game for you.
The Packers get the ball back with 6:14 remaining in the game. A touchdown and it is dagger time.
A short pass to Richard Rodgers nets 25 yards. A couple of plays later and another short pass, this time to Jeff Janis, gains 33 more yards. 1st and 10 at the SD20. The Packers get it down to the SD10 but are forced to settle for a field goal. GB 27 – SD 20.
The Packers 9 play, 70 yard drive consumed 3:37 from the clock but left Phillip Rivers with 2:37 and three timeouts. Plenty of time for a quarterback that the Packers have been unable to stop all day.
San Diego starts on its own SD20. Two plays and two first downs gives them 1st and 10 at their SD43 at the two minute warning. Four passes and four first downs later, the Chargers have it 1st and 10 on the GB3 with 33 seconds and two timeouts remaining.
This is an eternity in the NFL. SD can run any play in their playbook.
Packers fans at Lambeau Field and around the globe were imploring their team to make a play.
On first down, the Packers do hold Danny Woodhead to a 1 yard gain.
On 2nd down, Rivers over throws Antonio Gates but missed an open receiver in the right flat that would have been an easy TD.
On 3rd and goal from the GB2, Datone Jones stops Woodhead again for a one yard loss.
This brings up 4th and goal from the GB3 and the play of the game. Rivers throws to Woodhead in the right flat only to have rookie Damarious Randall to make a last second break on the ball and knock it away. Packers hold, Packers hold.
Green Bay wins 27-20.
