Round 1: DT Vernon Butler, Louisiana Tech

There are a few players I think would be perfect for the Packers in the first round. Tight end Hunter Henry could be exactly what the offense needs, but right now I’m leaning towards strengthening the defense with the first pick and focusing on offense in the later rounds.

Jarran Reed would make a lot of sense at No. 27 if he’s still available. If Reed is off the board, defensive tackle Vernon Butler would be a target. Butler is an excellent athlete who could help the Packers against the run. Unlike Reed, Butler also adds a ton of pass-rushing potential. Butler has drawn comparisons to the Jets’ Muhammad Wilkerson, which is extremely high praise.

The Louisiana Tech product can handle double teams and could become a force along the defensive line. Imagine pairing him with Mike Daniels. The Packers’ defensive line would suddenly look like one of the best in the league. With additions to inside linebacker later in the draft to allow Clay Matthews to move back outside, the entire front seven could be dominant in 2016 with a player like Butler added to the defensive line.

The Packers will have plenty of options at No. 27, and Butler would make a lot of sense.
