Green Bay Packers: Potential roster cuts for Packers to target in free agency
By Kenn Korb
Potential cut: Ahmad Brooks, 3-4 OLB (SF)
2015 statistics: 14 games played, 741 snaps (65.11 percent of team totals), 42 tackles, 6.5 sacks, 1 fumble fecovery, 1 pass defensed
Pro Football Focus rankings: 53.4 (overall); 47.6 (pass rush), 79.5 (run defense), 60.2 (coverage)
Brooks is a capable player who has given his teams a productive presence throughout his career.
As with most players on the 49ers last season though, he had a down year in a lost season. Just like with Bowman, Brooks could see his walking papers as part of a full-on rebuilding effort.
On a team that is better equipped to compete, Brooks could again find himself a useful contributor. It would seem most of that effort would come in the form of run defense, but with a better team around him he could see a resurgence in effectiveness.
Green Bay could see their depth depleted at the position Brooks plays even with Matthews returning; Nick Perry and Mike Neal are both free agents and could see themselves not brought back for certain reasons. Should that happen — especially in the case of Neal — Brooks would be a decent candidate to step into the rotation.
