Green Bay Packers: Potential roster cuts for Packers to target in free agency
By Kenn Korb
Potential cut: Martellus Bennett, TE (CHI)
2015 statistics: 11 games played, 726 snaps (67.16 percent of team totals), 53 receptions (80 targets), 439 yards, 3 TDs
Pro Football Focus rankings: 72.0 (overall); 70.3 (receiving), 72.0 (run block), 61.1 (pass block)
Bennett is a player Packers fans should know well; he has been a pretty strong producer for the Bears at TE for years now. His stats show a still-productive player that any offense could use.
The reason he shows up here is that his situation with the Bears may have deteriorated. He is scheduled to make about $5 million next year — an amount the Bears see as too high for the production Bennett provided them last season. There’s other underlying issues contributing to this as well, leaving the likeliest ending to this a parting of ways.
If he becomes available, he is a massive target (6′ 6″, 273 lbs) who adds value all across the field. His receiving skills are still good, but he also provides usually-stellar blocking for the running game. He could be a great piece to work with for the next year or two.
