Green Bay Packers: Ten free agents worth looking at
Green Bay Packers general manager Ted Thompson doesn’t often use free agency, but when he does he usually hits a home run.
The Green Bay Packers aren’t renowned for going on spending sprees in free agency, to the dismay of many Packers fans. But something must be working in Green Bay, because Thompson’s draft-and-develop approach has helped send the Packers to the playoffs for seven straight years, two away from tying the NFL record.
Thompson isn’t afraid to dip his toe into the free agency pool every now and then if the price is right. That usually requires a player to be cut from their previous team or for the deal to have a low financial risk. By signing players who have recently been cut, the transaction doesn’t count against the Packers when determining if they receive any compensatory picks the following year. And those extra picks are a staple of Thompson’s philosophy.
We usually forget about the first wave of free agency when it comes to Green Bay, but Thompson might surprise us this year. Nobody expected to see Julius Peppers strolling around Lambeau Field shortly after being cut by the Bears of all teams. Here’s 10 free agents Thompson should take a look at.
