Round 5 (via Philadelphia): RB Josh Ferguson, Illinois

Another trade.

With James Starks’ future up in the air, Ted Thompson identifies a running back in the fifth round and uses both of his sixth round picks (one gained from Philadelphia) to move up and grab Josh Ferguson out of Illinois.

Ferguson is a player I would really like to see in the Green Bay offense. He would be a perfect complement to Eddie Lacy with his blazing speed and quick feet. Defenses would have a hard time stopping him in open space after they’ve had Lacy running the ball down their throats.

Ferguson would find a role as a change-of-pace back behind Lacy’s thumping style. He’s a versatile player who can help out in the passing game, either out of the backfield or in the slot. Starks can catch the football, but Ferguson would give the Packers an upgrade in this department.

This deep into the draft, Green Bay would have its tight end to open up the middle of the field, another wide receiver with high upside, depth on the offensive line and now a young, talented running back to play behind Lacy. With these moves and a returning Jordy Nelson and Ty Montgomery, the offense would be poised to bounce back in a major way.
