Packers 2016 seven-round mock draft: Pass rush is the focus
Round 3 (88): OLB/ILB Joe Schobert, Wisconsin
In the third round, the Packers can double up at the linebacker spot with Wisconsin’s own versatile Joe Schobert. Schobert is listed as an outside linebacker, but would likely fit better in Dom Capers’ defense with a move inside.
We’ll come to that in a moment, because that doesn’t mean he can’t offer something as a pass rusher off the edge. That’s the beauty of selecting a player like Schobert. He has the ability to get after the quarterback and could find a spot as a rotational piece on the outside initially.
With a need at inside linebacker, Schobert would be able to compete for a starting job alongside Jake Ryan or Sam Barrington. He is an effective run-stuffer and can drop into coverage, which is something the Packers will miss from Clay Matthews if he moves back outside on a permanent basis.
Schobert would be a great asset for Dom Capers’ defense. Capers likes to move players around and create confusion for offenses, and the Wisconsin product’s versatility would make him an ideal candidate.
Schobert can also help out on special teams, which would be another plus for an improving unit.
