Packers 2016 Draft: Devil’s advocate with 10 first-round candidates
DT Vernon Butler, Louisiana Tech
Why it makes sense: Vernon Butler has immense potential, and he would offer a big upgrade along the defensive line. Butler can get after the passer and has even drawn comparisons to the Jets’ Muhammad Wilkerson. Working opposite Mike Daniels, the Packers’ defensive line could dominate.
Why it doesn’t make sense: With so much defensive line talent in this year’s class, would using a day one pick on Vernon Butler provide the best value as opposed to going after a pass rusher or linebacker?
Butler has talent, but he’s not the most dominant lineman in the class and the Packers could find other talent at the position on day two.
Verdict: There’s a lot to like about Butlers’ talent and it wouldn’t be surprising to see Green Bay select him in the first round. He could slot in from day one at defensive end opposite Daniels with Letroy Guion sliding to nose tackle.
Butler wouldn’t be my first choice at the position, but if Andrew Billings and A’Shawn Robinson are off the board, the Louisiana Tech product could come into play. As a pass rusher, he oozes potential which could make him an excellent pickup.
