Packers fans, want mock drafts? We’ve got a ton of them updated right here
Round 2: DT Austin Johnson, Penn State
The Packers can dip into the deep pool of defensive linemen at the bottom of the second round. The 6-foot-4, 314-pounder could line up at nose tackle for the Packers and be the anchor needed at the heart of the defensive line. His ability to eat up blocks and create room for the linebackers would appeal to Dom Capers.
This is the perfect year to be in need of defensive line help. With B.J. Raji taking at least one year off, the unit lost some depth. Mike Daniels is locked down at defensive end and Letroy Guion is likely to line up opposite — adding Johnson at nose tackle would help shore up the center of the line.
Johnson would help Green Bay stuff the run, a problem area for this defense for far too long now. The secondary has the potential to become of the league’s best, but we won’t see it at its best until the Packers can often force opponents into more third-and-longs.
Shoring up the defensive front will help the defense — a unit that took big strides in 2015 — move a step closer to the elite level that wins championships.
