Thomas Friesen: CB Artie Burns, Miami (FL)

Round 1: ILB Reggie Ragland

Last year, Ted Thompson surprised me with his first round selection of a DB in Damarious Randall. I feel like he spends another early round pick in the secondary this year.

At 6-foot, 195 pounds, and a 4.42 40-yard dash, Burns has the size and speed to compete at CB. With six interceptions in 2015, he’s shown that he can hang onto the ball.

Scouts note his versatility, being able to jam receivers at the line or turn quickly and stick with them down the field as a plus. However, they also note that he relies too heavily on his physical abilities, and is susceptible to strong route runners establishing inside position and torching him in man coverage.

Overall, Burns’ upside worth considering. Technique and football IQ come with time, but it’s much tougher to coach speed and ball skills. I see Artie Burns being a solid starting CB in 2-3 years.
