Packers 2016 Draft: Ranking top 10 first round options
7. ILB Reggie Ragland, Alabama
What he would bring to Green Bay: Ragland is a throwback inside linebacker who packs a punch and shuts down running backs. He may be limited to a two-down role in the NFL, but he can help set up long third down situations and help improve a leaky run defense.
A case for Ragland to be selected in the top-15 can be made, although the only concerns lie with his lack of speed and coverage ability. Ragland truly is an old-school hitter in the middle of the park.
Why the pick would make sense: The Packers’ defense is crying out for another inside linebacker, but the depth at the position in this class isn’t particularly great. While the unit needs someone who can do a better job in coverage with Clay Matthews moving back outside, Ragland would offer an upgrade over second-year Jake Ryan and Sam Barrington.
A combination of either Ryan/Barrington alongside Ragland would suddenly look much healthier at the position for the Packers. After missing out on C.J. Mosley two years ago, Ted Thompson could finally get his guy to play in the middle.
