Packers 2016 Draft: Last minute NFL mock draft
By Kenn Korb
Pick #20 — New York Jets
Reggie Ragland
Had the Jets managed to beat the Jets just once last year, this team would have been in the playoffs. Based on the projections going in, that’s surprising; looking at where this roster is now, it may be even more surprising, and they don’t seem too likely to take that next step as currently constructed.
They have definite talents, don’t get me wrong. That defensive line has three legit talents even with the loss of Damon Harrison, they have the dynamic duo of Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker at wide receiver, and multiple pieces across their secondary (of course including Darrelle Revis).
There are plenty of holes and aging players that are causes for concern though, and the pick here needs to shore up at least one of those areas.
With “Big Snacks” gone, a new anchor in the middle to stuff the running game would be a nice start; Rankins, Reed, and Billings could all provide that middle anchor. Should they want to move on from the massive extension coming for Muhammed Wilkerson, they could also target Vernon Butler (who has been compared to Wilkerson) to possibly give them a replica replacement at a cheaper price tag.
Offensive linemen could also be good here too (same guys as before).
The most impactful addition to this defense will likely be whoever ends up being added at linebacker though. Pass rushing LBs should get the first look, but there aren’t any left worth 1st round consideration.
It is in the middle though, there is one guy somewhat surprisingly (depending who you ask) still here: Ragland.
The Jets best option at MLB is David Harris, but he’s well past his best level, and the other options aren’t worth mentioning. Ragland may have some issues in coverage in the pros, but his strengths elsewhere would make him well worth the selection on its own. The fact they have a strong line in front of him and the excellent coverage of Revis behind him should make it even easier for him to emphasize his best traits.
