Where will Clay Matthews line up?

Mike McCarthy has expressed his desire to move Clay Matthews back to outside linebacker, while acknowledging the pass rushers’ versatility is one of his strengths. While Matthews will spend some time inside, he will need the young inside linebackers to step up for him to spend more time rushing off the edge.

Fourth-rounder Blake Martinez will be one to watch, as will second-year Jake Ryan and a healthy Sam Barrington. Between these three, do the Packers have enough at the position for Matthews to return to the outside? Maybe an undrafted free agent like Beniquez Brown steps up and makes a case for a roster spot.

In an ideal world, the Packers will only move Matthews inside when the matchup fits. If they feel the team would benefit from him blitzing from an inside position or dropping into coverage then so be it, but in recent years he’s been asked to play there out of necessity.
