Green Bay Packers: Projected preseason two-deep depth chart
Buck linebacker
Starter: Jake Ryan
Jake Ryan may have his limitations, but he’s the best the Packers have right now. Ryan’s strongest work comes against the run, although there are some concerns with his overall athleticism and ability to make plays in coverage.
He’ll enter the season as a starter in the hope to build on the solid foundations he put in place as a rookie. Ryan began to look more comfortable as the season wore on, solidifying his place in the starting lineup after beginning the season in a reserve role.
Ryan’s year two jump will play a pivotal role in how the Packers use Clay Matthews.
Backup: Blake Martinez
Like with Ryan a year ago, the Packers waited until the fourth round to select an inside linebacker in the draft. This time it was Blake Martinez, who many fans are hoping is the answer to the coverage linebacker deficiency the group faces should Matthews move back outside.
Expectations should be held in check for the fourth-rounder immediately out of the gates, but the rookie has starting potential in the future and may be needed to play an increasing role in the middle of the field as the season progresses.
Next: Mack linebacker
