Green Bay Packers: Top 15 veterans who are 25 and under
2. Mike Pennel, DT
It wouldn’t be a stretch to say that a good portion of Green Bay’s fandom look at Pennel with a measure of disdain due to his violation of the league’s substance abuse policy that will cost him the first four games of the regular season.
Let’s hope the Colorado native has learned from the error and/or carelessness of his ways because he has so much to offer as one of the team’s few proven run stuffers along the defensive line.
Pennel was outright force in 2015 by leading the team with a tackle per every 8.3 snaps. At a mountainous 322 pounds, the 25-year-old interior lineman is surprisingly light on his feet while also showing superb instincts to sniff out plays.
Provided he keeps himself in shape, a fresh, well-rested Pennel could infuse the defense with a well-timed shot in the arm upon his return, which would put him on schedule to play in Green Bay’s much-anticipated rivalry matchup versus the Cowboys in mid-October.
The downside to Pennel’s suspension, however, is that he will not be authorized to practice with his team throughout his four-week exile, which could prolong the amount of time he’ll need to knock off any lingering rust he may have from his prolonged absence.
