Green Bay Packers: Five players to watch in preseason opener vs. Cleveland Browns
Blake Martinez, LB
Inside linebacker has been a problem area for the Packers for what feels like forever. But with Clay Matthews moving back outside, finding a solution is of high importance.
The Packers have spent fourth-round draft picks at the position in each of the past two years. Jake Ryan returns after a solid rookie campaign, and he is now joined by Blake Martinez.
Expectations need to be held in check for the rookie, but Martinez has already made an impact, as Ryan Wood of the Green Bay Press-Gazette writes:
"“Coaches have been especially impressed with Martinez’s maturity. He is a young player, only a two-year starter despite playing four seasons at Stanford, but has learned the Packers concepts quickly. Defensive coordinator Dom Capers said Martinez’s instincts were noticeable from the moment he arrived.”"
Martinez is very much in contention to earn a starting job before the regular season curtain is raised. A strong preseason showing will strengthen his case to jump above Ryan or Sam Barrington on the depth chart.

With an ability in coverage the Packers have lacked, Martinez could fill one of the defense’s biggest needs entering the summer. All eyes will be on the rookie when preseason begins Friday.
