OLB Connor Barwin

Connor Barwin struggled in 2016 and eventually became a cap casualty in Philadelphia.

A large reason for his regression was a poor scheme fit. Barwin is best suited as an outside linebacker in a 3-4 defense, something he would be in Green Bay. The Eagles play with a 4-3 primarily.

Just three years ago he posted 14.5 sacks, and he could give the Packers pass rush a jolt of life. Along with Nick Perry and Clay Matthews, the Packers would have the foundations in place of a strong, consistent pass rush. The three would also offer plenty of experience.

While upgrading the position in the draft is necessary with or without Barwin, this would be a smart piece of business by the Packers.

As Barwin was cut by the Eagles, signing him wouldn’t count against any future compensatory draft selections, and that’s music to the ears of Ted Thompson.

The 30-year-old edge rusher won’t break the bank and would be a good replacement for Julius Peppers on a short-term deal.
