Inside linebackers

Starters: Jake Ryan, Blake Martinez

Reserves: Joe Thomas, Jordan Tripp

Considered the team’s biggest need in each of the past two drafts, the Packers have found a solid pair of starters in Jake Ryan and Blake Martinez. Martinez flashed potential as a rookie in 2016, and his development will be important at the heart of Dom Capers’ defense.

Joe Thomas and Jordan Tripp return to Green Bay for 2017, ensuring the position is filled with youth.

It’s clear Ted Thompson doesn’t view the inside linebacker position as a priority. He spent a pair of fourth-round picks on Ryan and Martinez, passing up on the opportunity to grab talented players at the position earlier on.

Verdict: Thompson’s focus will likely again be on finding more talent at premier defensive positions. Upgrading the pass rush and cornerback spots are high on the agenda, which means inside linebacker will fall down the list again.

No longer the pressing need it once was, the Packers would still benefit from an upgrade at the position, but it won’t be top of Thompson’s shopping list anytime soon.
