Green Bay Packers: Breaking down depth chart following free agency
Cornerbacks
Starters: Davon House, Damarious Randall, Quinten Rollins
Reserves: LaDarius Gunter, Makinton Dorleant, Demetri Goodson, Josh Hawkins, Herb Waters
Considered a strength this time last year, the cornerback position has become one of urgent need in Green Bay.
The unit looked so strong last year that nobody was really talking about Casey Hayward’s departure. With Sam Shields, Damarious Randall and Quinten Rollins, there was excitement amongst coaches and fans alike.
Then Shields got hurt and wouldn’t return. Randall and Rollins looked lost and the entire position became a mess.
Davon House was brought back to Green Bay after spending two years in Jacksonville. He adds a veteran presence to the secondary, and is easily the team’s best cornerback as things stand. The job is far from done, however.
Randall and Rollins will need to get healthy and put together a season closer to their rookie campaigns. The development of the young guys is every bit as important as finding more talent in the draft.
Verdict: House’s arrival helps, but Ted Thompson needs to add more cornerbacks to the roster. Expect him to go in for a corner early in the draft, and it’s a position he may revisit more than once.
It’s a deep class at the position which helps. The Packers need to find immediate help.
