3. Trade up in the first round

Trading down makes plenty of sense for the Packers this year. Trading up, on the other hand, would definitely qualify as a bold move.

When Thompson moved back into the first round to select Matthews in 2009, it certainly worked out. But Ted has never once traded up from his first selection in any draft (he took B.J. Raji earlier in 2009).

Thompson simply loves his draft picks too much to give them away unless he falls in love with a player like Matthews. That doesn’t mean it’s impossible for that to happen again, however.

If one of the first round cornerbacks takes a bit of a tumble and he happens to be the guy Thompson covets, that could necessitate a move up. But on the other hand, the cornerback depth in this draft means the Packers could likely find a similarly-rated player staying where they are.

There are certain years where moving up makes perfect sense, but this year doesn’t seem to have that feel. However, as we’ve learned, expected the unexpected with Thompson.
