Andrew Hanlon: Packers trade out of first round

When it’s all said and done, after we’ve waited breathlessly for three plus hours to see who Ted Thompson selects in the first round to be the next great Green Bay Packer… he will ruin our night by trading back into the second round.

Sure, it will suck to wait around forever for a pick that doesn’t come on Thursday night, but it’s the best plan of action for Thompson to take.

Assuming a team wants to trade back into the first round at No. 29, Ted should be able to grab an additional pick early in the second round as well as probably at least a fourth to go along with it, giving the Packers more ammunition to fill their myriad of holes.

What’s more is that, unless someone unexpectedly falls, the talent gap between the 29th and say 38th selections isn’t that great, and well worth the opportunity to bring in extra picks.

This way, Thompson is likely still able to grab a starter at the deeper positions like cornerback, running back or edge rusher, which also coincide with Green Bay’s greatest needs. It’s a win-win and the ideal scenario for the Packers come Thursday night.
