If you had said a year ago that the Packers’ top four running backs entering 2017 would be Ty Montgomery—a wide receiver—and three players still in college, you would have been laughed out of the building.

But here we are, and the running back depth chart looks as healthy as it has done in a number of years. While we’re yet to see what the trio of Jamaal Williams, Aaron Jones and Devante Mays can bring to the table at the NFL level, the Packers are pleased with their draft selections and have placed a ton of confidence in them, which is evident by the post-draft cuts of Christine Michael and Don Jackson.

Montgomery will enter the season as the starter, and rightly so. The former wide receiver flashed a ton of potential at the running back position after making the switch last year. Montgomery displayed good patience, vision and burst. He excels in open space, can run down tacklers but also proved he is talented between the tackles.

With a full offseason to refine his skills as a running back, Montgomery can solidify his spot as the lead back in Green Bay. Between the four of them and fullback Aaron Ripkowski, one of the team’s biggest needs entering the draft now looks like a strength.
