The Tim Masthay era in Green Bay ended a couple of years ago, and Jake Schum has come and gone in one season. The Packers are in desperate need of a good punter, and they might just have one in this undrafted rookie out of The U.

Vogel is likely one of the only undrafted rookie free agents that has a good chance at making the Packers 53 man roster.  He is the only punter currently on the Packers roster, so the job is his to lose.

Vogel impressed in the first couple of practices.

According to Ryan Wood—beat writer for the Green Bay Press-Gazette— Vogel has a good shot at becoming the starting punter due to his punts against the rush.

However, Vogel has been somewhat inconsistent — having one or two bad punts after a bevy of good ones.

Packers special teams coach Ron Zook spoke in an interview Wednesday about the main thing Vogel needs to focus on.

"“I think so far he’s done a nice job,” Zook said in reference to Vogel. “In the National Football League, consistency is key. He knows that. You have to be consistent.”"

A great punter doesn’t receive much praise, but a bad one gets plenty of criticism. Over the past couple years, the punt game, and punt/kick return game has been simply irrelevant.

The return game may be a different story, but the signing of Justin Vogel seems like a step in the right direction for the Packers.
