Green Bay Packers: Five lessons learned in Week 3 win
2. More Allison and less Cobb
Geronimo Allison was nothing short of epic in the way he emerged on Green Bay’s game-tying drive at the end of regulation and in overtime.
The 6-foot-3 wideout made three clutch receptions of 17, 11 and 3 yards during the aforementioned drive, and more importantly, shook off a bad drop in recording his second of the three.
The second-year man saved his best for the extra session, though, when he fought off Adam “Pacman” Jones down the left sideline for a 72-yard catch-and-run in which he twice ran around his defender and nearly scored.
The 23-year-old’s statement performance demands that he be used with greater frequency even at the expense of Randall Cobb, who sat out Week 3 with a chest injury.
At this stage of his career, Allison brings considerably more upside than No. 18 in terms of size, strength and durability.
Cobb remains a useful player from the slot, but Jordy Nelson can easily slide into that position and relegate the former first-round pick to the team’s WR4.
At 5-foot-10, 192 pounds and lots of mileage on his frame, Cobb is becoming increasingly fragile and watching him exit games has become a rather common occurrence over the past two seasons.
Why not maximize what you can get out of the Kentucky product by issuing him fewer reps?
