Green Bay Packers: Top 5 moments of the 2017 season
5. Aaron Jones runs in game-winner against Bucs
Aaron Jones has put together quite the highlight reel in his first NFL season. One of his finest plays helped save the Packers’ season. To keep their playoff hopes alive they had to defeat the Buccaneers in Week 13.
Brett Hundley hadn’t found much joy through the air, and much of Green Bay’s success came through the power running of Jamaal Williams. Williams wore down the Tampa Bay defense, allowing for Jones to burn them for a home-run play.
Needing a touchdown to win the game in overtime, Jones recognized that the designed play between the tackles wouldn’t be successful. The Bucs had it well defended. Instead Jones bounced outside to his left, and from there he could use his speed to blaze past defenders and dive into the end zone.
It was Jones’ first carry in his first game back from a knee injury. But like he had done all year, the rookie maximized his minutes on the field, taking advantage of his opportunity and making a great play.
This moment also gave fans their first taste of a Williams-Jones combo in the backfield. Whereas Williams can wear defenses down with his powerful, tough running, Jones is a home-runner hitter with good vision, burst and big-play potential, particularly when he hits the open field.
Of all of Jones’ fine plays in 2017, his game-winner against Tampa Bay might sit on top of the list.
