Packers free agency 2018: Who should Green Bay bring back?
Who should the Green Bay Packers re-sign, and who should new general manager Brian Gutekunst let walk in free agency?
With Gutekunst in charge, the Packers are entering an exciting offseason. How will his free agency decisions differ from Ted Thompson’s? Thompson, who often took a conservative approach, allowed a number of players to depart ahead of their third contract. Will Gutekunst take the same approach or be more willing to retain older players on the roster?
Morgan Burnett’s future will be interesting to monitor. With plenty of young talent at safety, it feels like the Packers have prepared for life without Burnett. But will Gutekunst see it that way, or spend big to retain one of the most experienced members of Green Bay’s defense?
With Davante Adams and Corey Linsley already re-signed, just eight players are set to become unrestricted free agents. Burnett is the biggest name. He’s joined by Ahmad Brooks, Davon House, Jahri Evans, Jeff Janis, Quinton Dial, Richard Rodgers and Brett Goode.
According to Spotrac, the Packers currently have an estimated $23.69 million in cap room for 2018. Gutekunst will likely look to extend Aaron Rodgers’ contract at some point, but he could free up some room by either restructuring the deals of Jordy Nelson, Randall Cobb or Clay Matthews, or releasing one of the three.
Let’s take a look at the Packers’ free agents to be. Who should they re-sign?
