Packers 2018 Draft: 5 intriguing East-West Shrine prospects
Five players from the East-West Shrine Game that could interest the Green Bay Packers in the 2018 NFL Draft.
While often viewed as a showcase for college football’s “B” and “C” level talents, the East-West Shrine Game (ESWG) annually puts out prospects that not only get drafted, but go on to become longtime contributors and sometimes even stars.
Look no further than 49ers quarterback sensation Jimmy Garoppolo, who in 2014 parlayed his performance in St. Petersburg, FL into an invitation to compete in the Senior Bowl the very next week.
That 2014 EWSG class also featured the likes of Ethan Westbrooks, Preston Brown, Andre Hal and Charles Leno Jr. among others. The 2016 edition saw Geronimo Allison and Dean Lowry make the most of their opportunities to impress NFL personnel by getting the attention of Green Bay’s decision makers, and both went on to become members of the Packers.
Players who emerged in this past Saturday’s exhibition certainly didn’t include any quarterbacks, as none of the signal callers on hand displayed the type of consistent accuracy nor decision-making skills to project as future starters.
However, there were several defenders that flashed, particularly at the first two levels, that might be of interest to a Packer team in dire need of playmakers in the effort to retool and reignite a dilapidated unit.
Here are five players who stood out all week in practice sessions while also bringing their best on game day. Each one possesses multiple characteristics that could make them a strong fit with the Packers down the road.
