Packers free agency 2018: Three players Green Bay should target
1. Trumaine Johnson, CB, LA Rams
Despite Green Bay using last year’s first two picks on improving the secondary, it is still a problem and it is time to spend money to improve this unit.
The Packers finished 23rd in the league in pass yards allowed per game (236.8) last season. Too often they allowed teams to keep drives alive and struggled to make stops on third-and-long.
Johnson, an unrestricted free agent, hits the market after playing the last two years under the franchise tag with the Los Angeles Rams.
He had a successful season, recording 57 tackles, 13 passes defended, two interceptions (one returned for a touchdown), forced and recovered one fumble and played in every game this year.
Each of the last three seasons Johnson played in at least 14 games. The Packers secondary struggled with staying healthy, and that should be a reason why they should want to bring in Johnson.
The 6-foot-1 defensive back was the Rams’ best corner. According to Bleacher Report’s Ian Whaton, he was the best press-man coverage corner in the league last season.
Green Bay is in desperate need for a physical corner that can jam receivers at the line. The price tag will be extremely high, and whoever signs Johnson will be overpaying him.
But it’s time for Green Bay to break the bank on a defensive playmaker, who will be reliable and bring attitude to the defense.
