It’s already been an eventful offseason for the Green Bay Packers, and it’s only just getting started.
A lot needs to happen for the Packers to make a serious Super Bowl push in 2018. What would make a perfect offseason?
The end of Green Bay’s eight-year playoff steak prompted a number of changes in Packers News. Brian Gutekunst has replaced Ted Thompson as the team’s general manager, president Mark Murphy has reshuffled the structure of the front office and Mike McCarthy has made a number of changes to his coaching staff.
Mike Pettine takes over from Dom Capers as the Packers’ defensive coordinator, and Joe Philbin returns to his old job, becoming the team’s offensive coordinator once again.
The difference one play can make to an entire franchise. Had Anthony Barr not broken Aaron Rodgers’ collarbone, how different would the season have gone? There’s a strong possibility the Packers would have made the playoffs. Would have they gone all the way to the Super Bowl? There are plenty of reasons to doubt that, mainly due to the state of the defense, but we’ll never know.
A losing season, the Packers’ first in almost a decade, exposed a number of problems up and down the roster. Putting it right in one offseason won’t be easy, but it’s definitely possible. The Eagles and Rams became Super Bowl contenders almost overnight, and they didn’t have the benefit of getting Rodgers back from injury.
We’re just weeks away from the start of the new league year and the excitement of free agency. The draft, too, is going to be interesting to watch with Gutekunst applying his own style to the three-day event.
