9. Be more active in free agency

The main benefit of freeing up cap room is that it allows the Packers to be more active in free agency than we’ve seen in recent years. That’s the expectation with Gutekunst running the show.

“We’re not going to leave any stone unturned as far as every avenue of player acquisition,” Gutekunst said in his opening press conference last month, via ESPN.com.

He also referred to free agency as “an absolute must as an accessory piece”.

Don’t expect the Packers to suddenly go on a wild spending spree like the Jaguars. The Packers aren’t in a position to do that, and it wouldn’t be the right move to make even if they could.

The Patriots are a perfect example of how to use free agency. For the most part they sign players relatively cheap to help fix short-term needs. But when the time is right they will make a big splash, signing a Darrelle Revis or a Stephon Gilmore.

Being more active in free agency will not only help the Packers add more talent to their roster, but also experience. That can be crucial deep in the playoffs.

The Packers don’t need wholesale changes to the roster, but a few smart signings could help them make a stronger push for a championship, even if that means spending big on a free agent.
