Packers: 10 ways Green Bay can have perfect offseason
3. Find an upgrade at tight end
The Packers are back to square one at the tight end position.
Jared Cook gave the offense something it had lacked for over three years in the second half of 2016, but last offseason’s changes set the team back. Cook was replaced with Martellus Bennett and Lance Kendricks, and that plan backfired in a big way.
Richard Rodgers, a free agent in March, faces an uncertain future, potentially leaving a vacancy on the roster.
One of Green Bay’s biggest priorities this offseason must be to find a talented, pass-catching tight end who can give the offense something it currently lacks.
Maybe the answer will come through the draft, but it’s rare rookie tight ends produce in Year 1.
Lombardi Ave’s Joe D’Aloisio named three tight ends he thinks the Packers should target in free agency in his recent article. The pick of the trio was Philadelphia’s Trey Burton.
While Burton’s numbers don’t jump off the page — he posted just 248 yards with five touchdowns in 2017 — much of that was due to Zach Ertz’s dominance alongside him.
Give Burton a more featured role in an offense led by Aaron Rodgers, and watch his production increase.
Whether it’s Burton, another free agent or a draft pick, the Packers need an upgrade at tight end.
