Packers free agency: 3 tight ends Green Bay should consider
1. Trey Burton, Philadelphia Eagles
Trey Burton showed off his arm in Super Bowl LII, when he threw a touchdown pass to quarterback Nick Foles, but the Packers won’t be interested in his arm.
Burton had a productive season despite being buried in the depth chart behind Zach Ertz and veteran Brent Celek.
He made the most of his opportunities and finished the season with 23 catches for 248 yards and five scores. Three of his five touchdowns came in the red zone, while his other two scores came in-between the opponents 49-20 yard line.
The fourth-year tight end will be 26 years old at the start of the 2018 season and based on his production in limited snaps, Burton has a ton of potential.
According to Spotrac, Burton’s market value is about $7 million a season, which is high in comparison to the rest of the free agent tight ends this offseason.
Burton was ranked as “average,” and the 13th best TE according to Pro Football Focus.
Expect that ranking and his numbers to skyrocket once he becomes a starter, especially if it is in Green Bay.
Aaron Rodgers and the Packers offense need a reliable tight end option. Burton would be an excellent red zone target and help move the chains.
Rather than settling for another one-year veteran, Green Bay should strongly consider opening the wallet for a young playmaker that can produce for several years.
