Packers: Biggest questions at each position group on the roster
Running back: What is Ty Montgomery’s role moving forward?
The Packers are set at the running back position with Jamaal Williams and Aaron Jones forming a 1-2 punch in the backfield. Williams and Jones made the most of their opportunities as rookies, both giving the offense something different. Williams can be the workhorse back, slowing wearing down defenses. Jones, meanwhile, is a home run hitter. He can make a big play at any moment.
But where does this leave Ty Montgomery?
Montgomery began the 2017 season as the starting running back and dominated the backfield touches early on. It was only due to an injury suffered against the Bears that opened the door for the rookies to show what they could do.
Montgomery is too talented to not feature in Mike McCarthy’s offense, but it almost certainly won’t be as the lead back, barring injury. Maybe he’ll switch back to wide receiver, or take on a hybrid role rotating between the two.
My expectation is that Montgomery will line up in a number of different positions. At times he’ll be in the backfield, similar to how Randall Cobb has been used in the past, while other times he’ll be out wide.
Montgomery’s placement on the field can create favorable mismatches for the Packers. No matter what position he’s given, the former third-round pick needs to be on the field as often as possible.
