Packers: Biggest questions at each position group on the roster
Tight end: When will the Packers sign a tight end?
The Packers are back to square one at the tight end position. Since losing Jermichael Finley in 2013, they have been unable to find a long-term replacement.
Jared Cook was the closest thing to it in the second half of 2016, but the Packers couldn’t work out a long-term deal last offseason and instead moved forward with free agent signings Martellus Bennett and Lance Kendricks. Bennett is no longer on the team, and Kendricks disappointed in his first season with the Packers.
Now Brian Gutekunst has to decide whether to re-sign Richard Rodgers. While Rodgers would provide some depth, the Packers would still need to look for an upgrade this offseason.
The best bet might be through free agency.
Jimmy Graham is the biggest name set to hit the market, but a cheaper option like Trey Burton could make sense. Burton’s numbers don’t jump off the page, which is partly due to Zach Ertz’s dominance in Philadelphia, but he could make an impact in Green Bay’s offense.
As we saw with Cook during the Packers’ eight-game winning streak in 2016, the offense can hit another gear with a tight end able to stretch the field. They need to find one this offseason.
