Packers Free Agency: Is adding a running back beyond the realms of possibility?
1. Jerick McKinnon, Minnesota Vikings
It seems that the Packers often lose their players to NFC North rivals, so why not take a page out of everybody else’s playbook.
Jerick McKinnon was drafted by the Minnesota Vikings in the third round of the 2014 NFL Draft and is coming off a career-year.
The third-string back proved his worth after starter and rookie Dalvin Cook tore his ACL early in the season.
McKinnon averaged 3.8 yards a carry for a total of 570 yards and three scores. He also showed off his pass-catching ability, snagging 51 passes for 421 yards and two touchdowns.
According to Spotrac, McKinnon’s calculated market value is $4 million a season. At that average, he would become the 15th highest-paid back in the league.
Despite being buried on the depth chart, McKinnon earned an overall grade of 84.6 from Pro Football Focus and was labeled as an “above average” back.
McKinnon will be 26 at the start of the 2018 season and would be the oldest back in an extremely young Packers backfield.
The former Georgia Southern Eagle has great hands, is quick and athletic, and would be a dangerous target for Aaron Rodgers.
This past season Packers fans witnessed McKinnon’s ability to catch the ball out of the backfield and follow his blockers into the end zone, He scored the team’s first touchdown on a 27-yard screen pass in Minnesota’s 23-10 victory over Green Bay.
