Green Bay Packers: Re-drafting the 2017 NFL Draft
Round 4: Desmond King, CB, Iowa
Packers pick: Jamaal Williams, RB, BYU
Since I re-drafted Kamara earlier Williams won’t be necessary to grab here. He’s looking like a good pick, but there are other needs to address.
King had an awesome rookie year for the Chargers. He’s not somebody we can be too upset about though since he was expected to transition to safety in the NFL. He had a great junior year at Iowa where he had eight interceptions and won the Jim Thorpe award as the nation’s most outstanding defensive back. His senior year wasn’t as flashy and probably led to him falling in the draft.
The transition to safety was expected because he isn’t a great athlete and his great rookie year is suspected to be due to him playing in one of the better secondaries in the NFL alongside former Packer Casey Hayward. The Packers may not have thrown him into the fire right away, but he would’ve been asked to do a little more. Regardless, King has awesome ball and cover skills and is looking like an NFL cornerback after all.
Side note: Embarrassingly enough, when I was hearing about the Packers being interested in a CB named ‘King’ I thought it was Desmond King, not Kevin King. All is well that ends well in this re-draft as the Packers still land a corner named King.
