Packers free agency: 3 safeties still available Green Bay could sign
Tre Boston, Los Angeles Chargers
Similar to Reid, Boston is still very young (25 years old) but he is already performing at a high level.
Boston spent his first couple of seasons with Carolina. He only started 10 games in the 2016 season. He also ended that year on injured reserve and was eventually released in the offseason.
It was a surprising move to say the least. He was a key contributor in a great Carolina defense that appeared in Super Bowl 50.
The only difference between Reid and Boston is the experience at that linebacker/safety hybrid position. That shouldn’t stop him from coming to Packers News, though. The Packers have been grooming Jones for that position. Boston is more of a coverage safety.
Last season was his best, statistically. He recorded five interceptions, eight pass defenses and 56 tackles.
A problem with Green Bay’s defense is ball skills within the secondary. Boston’s five interceptions would have led the Packers in 2017. He would be an immediate improvement even if he wouldn’t play that hybrid safety/linebacker position.
Boston is listed as a free safety, a position currently taken by Clinton-Dix, but there is the possibility that one of the two moves over to strong safety.
A trio of Boston, Clinton-Dix and Jones would be a young, promising group that could easily take the NFL by storm for 2018 and beyond.
