Packers: 2017 draft class will lead turnaround on defense
By Jesse Fry
Montravius Adams
Even though Adams is playing at a position of strength and depth, he can still make major contributions.
The D-line was already in good shape heading into the offseason. Kenny Clark and Dean Lowry made the year one to two progress the coaches are hoping last year’s picks make. Those two, alongside Mike Daniels, made the base three-man line formidable. Add in the signing of Muhammad Wilkerson and now the line looks even better.
Adams started out his rookie year with an injury and was forced to play catchup when the season came. In college Adams showed a quick burst at the snap and was a penetrating force on pass rush opportunities. If he can develop that quick step while maintain gap control the Packers will have a very solid D-line rotation.
Adams won’t have the same type of role that will be asked of King and Jones. Adams’ value comes in being a valuable rotational player. The value of the depth cannot be understated. McCarthy likes to keep the big guys fresh, and having no drop off when starters come off the field can wreak havoc on opposing offenses. A fresh set of good inside rushers can not only crash the pocket but open up the edges for Clay Matthews and Nick Perry.
Also, injuries will occur at some point of the season. Having this kind of depth is so important.
Should all players stay healthy then Daniels, Clark and Wilkerson should be able to make a big and meaningful impact on what Packer Nation hopes is a deep playoff run.
